***Two weeks after the death of his family***
William Wade had lost it all. His home, his parents, his wife, his future. Everything that had made him happy, because he had been happy. He may not have gone to college, or may have never left Kansas, but he was happy.
Then it happened, he still felt her blood in his hands. He had cleaned them god knew how many times but it still didn't remove the feeling, he swore he could still see his hands red from time to time. The police would be looking for him, but what could he said. "Oh yes officer, I had to kill my wife because she killed my parents and was about to kill me too?"
This whole thing seemed like a bad joke. He kept hoping that if he woke up someone would tell him it had all been a nightmare. However it didn't happen, and he wasn't sleeping much anyway, the only rest he seemed to have was when he drank himself until he passed out, which was exactly what had happened today.
His head was aching like a bitch, he was thirsty, and everything was dark, he however could hear something. Music. It was loud and he could now distinguish it, it was Highway to Hell by AC/DC.
Hey Momma, look at me
I'm on my way to the promised land
I'm on the highway to hell
His eyes began adapting to the darkness, there was light coming from the frame of the door, wherever the hell he was. He remembered being at a local bar, getting more and more drinks from the bar tender, but that was it. Now he was shirtless, in some bed that smelled like vanilla, and hearing music he had no idea where it came from.
He got up from the bed and made his way to the door, stepping over something that pinched his foot. "Sunuva..." he said as he opened the door and some light entered the room.
It looked like a chick's room, and apparently he had stepped over some hair clip or something. At least this explained the vanilla smell. Some light and the sound were apparently coming from the bathroom. He made his way there and looked inside, there was a girl singing to the tune as she closed her eyes and dried her hair.
And I'm going down, all the way down
I'm on the highway to hell
As the song ended she turned off the hair drier before opening her eyes.
"Shit!" she said as she looked at him. "Ya scared me dude..."
He kept looking at her.
"Where am I?" he asked glad that the music was over, it didn't help that much to his headache.
"Where the hell does it look like ya are?" asked the girl. "Ya ain't the brightest bulb in the bunch, are ya?"
He looked around, it was a really small apartment, a bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen, small living room and that was it. Not a lot of stuff, a bed and a lot of clothes in the bedroom, the kitchen had a microwave and a fridge, and the living room simply had a couple sofa's and a Tv, some pictures on top of the TV, though Law noticed that all the pictures were taken badly, her eyes seemed weird in all of them. It also looked like they were on the second floor of somewhere. So they were in this girl's apartment, that still didn't explain how he got here, or why he was on her bed.
"What's your name anyway? Ya never told me" asked the girl to him. Now that he looked closer, she wasn't bad looking though she looked like she came out of a zombies movie. Black hair, a shit load of tattoos, piercings in every pierceable place, she was also very pale.
He didn't answer this time either, he felt like uttering his name would be admitting to everything that had happened, and he wasn't ready for that. "I got no name" he answered to the girl, which in turn looked at him rather oddly.
"Where do ya came from then?" she asked him as she started applying liner to her eyes looking in the mirror.
"Lawrence, Kansas..." he said to the girl as he looked around the girl's bedroom floor for his t-shirt.
"I put it on the washin' machine..." said the girl. "Ya threw up rather badly yesterday and believe ya me, ya wouldn' like to be wearin' it right now"
He simply stopped searching and went to her window, her Pick up was parked on the front of the building. He checked his pocket but he still had his keys. "Did ya drive my truck here?"
"I haven' moved that thin', ya haven' gone anywhere, I am the owner of the bar, we are on top of it" she said to him.
"Oh... Alrigh'" he said as he went back to the bathroom to talk to the girl. She seemed decent, weird, but at least decent. She talked like a sailor as well.
"Ya're pretty far from Kansas" said the girl. "So what the hell are ya doin' in Austin, Texas Lawrence?"
She was referring to him as Lawrence, and he thought that was way better than being nameless. It was different, but he was living in a different world now, and a new name was needed in his eyes. He didn't really answer again, he didn't know what to say.
"Is it about your wife?" she asked. "Ya were talkin' 'bout her a lot yesterday, and 'bout what killed her"
Lawrence's expression turned white now. He must have been extremely drunk and venting about his life to this girl whom he just got to meet. He didn't really remember a lot, he had been pretty drunk already when he got to the bar.
"Ya know, ya shouldn' be talkin' 'bout 'n thin's like that so hastily" said the girl. "Ya could get yourself killed"
Lawrence didn't know what she meant, how could he get killed for talking about that sort of stuff? It happened once, he didn't even know what had happened, it was all really weird and nothing really made sense. "Talkin' 'bout what?" he asked truly confused.
"Demons..." she said as if it was every day chit chat. "They sometimes frequent bars, ya don' want to pick a fight with one of 'em, believe me"
"What the fuck are ya talkin' 'bout? Demons?" he asked surprised.
"So ya don' know 'bout demons?" she asked surprised. "Well ya fought one already, that thin' that killed your wife... That's a demon"
"How would ya even know that?" asked Lawrence to the girl who was now getting him a bit angry, though a demon would explain a lot.
"The signs... What ya told me yesterday" she said. "It all fits, that's their M.O."
"So I killed a demon?" said Lawrence to the girl.
"Nah, ya killed your wife dude" said the girl. "Ya can't kill a demon like that... Though it certainly did prevented it from killin' ya"
He couldn't believe her words, he hadn't killed it?. His wife was still there someway? What the hell was going on here? "So ya mean I could've saved her?"
"If ya were a hunter, ya maybe..." she said. "But ya fought it well, it was either him or ya dude, don' feel sorry 'bout it"
How could he not feel bad about that? He could have saved his wife, he didn't really know how, he didn't understood that part but to know that he could have saved her was devastating. "What the hell do ya mean by hunter?"
"Someone that kills demons, ghosts, werewolves, ya know everything supernatural" she explained as she finished applying make up. "But I bet ya didn' know 'bout that either, it's okay... I don' expect ya to know"
He just stood there silent for some time, the mere thought of perhaps saving his wife would haunt him forever. He however now knew what had killed his wife and that it appeared that it could be killed.
"Come on, your shirt should be out of the dryer by now" said the girl as she went to the kitchen's closet where her dryer and washing machine were located. She opened the dryer and threw his shirt at him.
"How do ya become a hunter?" asked Lawrence to the girl as he put his shirt on.
"Ya don't want to be a hunter dude..." said the girl. "Their life sucks, once ya start killin' them, they start lookin' for ya, and there's really no rest... I've never seen one dying of old age to tell ya the truth"
"How do ya know all this?" asked Lawrence. "Are ya a hunter?"
"I'm not... My dad was..." she said. "He died when I was 15, killed by a shapeshifter"
"A shapeshifter?" asked Lawrence with surprise. "Ya mean there are thin's out there, that look like other people?"
"'N animals" she said. "They were persons once, at least that's what the tale says... They just stopped bein' one many years ago"
"I am sorry 'bout your dad" he said.
"It's okay..." she said. "It was a long time ago, I'm over it..."
"Did ya get the shapeshifter?" he asked, curious if she had gotten revenge. He would have, with a hunter as a father she surely had to have the skill to kill it. "Did ya kill it?"
"If ya want a piece of advice" said the girl to him. "Let it go... The sooner ya accept your wife is dead, the sooner ya'll be able to get on with your life"
"She was my life..." said Law to her. Now that he knew what had killed his wife and that it was still alive somewhere, he had a new purpose in life, kill it. And every other demon like him.
"Get a new life..." said the girl getting a bit angry. "Ya know, I helped ya yesterday because ya seemed like ya needed help, but I won't be responsible for settin' another hunter free, shit happens..."
She went to the door and opened it. "Get out, and believe me, I'm doin' ya a favor... let it go"
He headed downstairs and got out of the building by a door adjacent to the bar. His truck was parked just like he remembered, he lit the ignition and drove back to his motel room. This girl had gave him a lot to think about. He spent all day and night googling on the motel's over expensive computer with internet.
***Some time later***
Lawrence parked his truck and took the knife he had just bought out of the pack and into his pocket. He had found out something rather interesting and wanted to prove it.
He climbed upstairs and knocked on the door, no one answered. The bar was still closed, he opened the door, apparently it wasn't unlocked, something was wrong here.
"Ya know, I really had ya for a poor dumb farmer" said the girl from the shadows of the living room. The lights were out and he couldn't see much. "I was actually trying to help ya, I told ya that nothing good ever came from huntin' but oh no William... You wouldn' listen to me"
"How do ya know my name?" said Lawrence to her. His face still the same as she looked at her sillouette sitting in the couch.
"The same way I know everythin' I know..." said the girl. "Ya didn' do your homework right then"
"Ya killed the girl and killed her dad, ya stole her life..." said Lawrence to the girl.
"She was a bitch, she mocked me, drove a girl on our class to die from anorexia..." said the girl. "I did the world a favor, believe me"
"And then ya turned..." said Lawrence to her.
"Her father killed all my family, my brothers and parents..." said the girl. "I only did to him what ya wanna do to that demon, ya are not any better than me William"
"Ya killed an innocent girl" said Lawrence still not giving in to fear or rage, he was rather calmed actually, thinking everything thoroughly, not knowing what to do, it all seemed so unbelievable.
"She was far from innocent" said the girl. "Either way, I'm sorry ya had to find out about everything... Ya wanted to be a hunter? I can make sure ya go out like one"
She moved at amazing speed to where he was and with a hand around his neck she lifted him up and pinned him to the wall.
"It's a shame though, I really did like ya" said the shapeshifter. "I just can't let ya ruin my life"
She leaned for a kiss, getting it's tongue inside Lawrence's mouth as she choked him, and as she tried to fight it, Lawrence was trying to speak.
"...ee ya... ell" said Lawrence during the kiss. As he felt the lack of air and could feel his face turning purple.
"What was that?" said the girl as she observed amused and smiling as Lawrence choked to death.
"I said..." he said in between chokes. "See ya in hell"
With that he finally managed to get the silver knife out of his pocket and simply stabbed the girl, which eyes turned into those of surprise and let him go, reaching for his gut where the knife was stuck.
Lawrence fell to the floor as he regained his breath and simply watched as the girl died. Taking the silver knife out of her gut and watching her. He wondered if he had let her live if she hadn't decided to attack him. She might not have been human but she had been in the same position as him, someone had killed all she knew and she wanted revenge, he couldn't really answer what he would have done because in the end she had decided to attack him, and he had to do it, he was left with no choice.
Not looking back, he left the apartment and got into his pick up, he now knew there was something out there that he needed to kill, and that had gave him in a weird way, a whole new life.
